About Xi Software

A UK company building job scheduling and print management for Unix and Linux since 1986. We do not do anything else.

Xi Software builds job scheduling and print management software for Unix and Linux. We were incorporated in 1986. Xi-Text has been in production since 1984 and Xi-Batch since 1990.

We do not do anything else. In our own words, from a company flyer, and still true:

We specialise entirely in high-quality job scheduling and print management software. We don't do anything else. We concentrate on making these the best, the most robust and the most flexible products in the market today.

What we build, and why it is still here

Two of our products are older than most of the companies that buy them. That is not nostalgia.

Scheduling batch work and delivering printed output are unglamorous problems that do not go away. Every organisation running unattended work needs it to run in the right order across the right machines, and needs the output to reach the right device. The technology around that changes constantly. The requirement does not.

What has kept these products in service for four decades is a decision we keep making: we do not break what you have built. On-disk formats, the network protocol, command-line flags and exit codes are treated as a contract. Customers who wrote integrations against Xi-Batch twenty years ago still have them working.

That is why one customer told us it 'never comes up in conversation - you don't think about it, it just works, like electricity, always there'. It is the highest compliment infrastructure software gets.

How we work

Scope

Focused, not broad

We are not a management framework. We do a small number of things and would rather do them properly than add another.

Footprint

Event-driven and light

Our software is designed to consume very little of the system it runs on, and to require no relational database. It scales from a single desktop to large multi-processor systems.

Installation

No kernel modification

Policy since the beginning. It is why the products run on so many platforms and why they coexist cleanly with everything else you have installed.

Fit

Configurable to your operation, not ours

Screen layouts, menus, keystrokes, error messages - all of it can be tailored per user, per system, or translated. Customers migrating from another scheduler have configured Xi-Batch to resemble what their operators already knew, which is what made the transition work.

People

Support that answers

We are a small team of Unix and Linux engineers, and the person who answers your call can usually fix your problem.
